Down To Earth With A Bang

Milwall 3 Leeds United 1

Despite scoreing first Leeds were well beaten in the end by a home side who made a major statement that they will have a major say in promotion at seasons end. Two goals from Neil Harris helped Millwall beat Leeds and move above their promotion rivals. The hosts had to come from behind as Luciano Becchio swivelled and opened the scoring with a superb 25-yard shot.

Millwall equalised when Dave Martin lifted the ball over keeper David Lucas after good work from Harris. And it was Harris who then took over when he put his side in front with a header before curling home for his second goal to seal the victory.

Millwall: Forde, Craig, Robinson, Whitbread, Frampton, Grabban (Dunne 90), Martin, Laird, Abdou, Harris, Alexander.
Subs Not Used: Edwards, Grimes, Moore, Noel-Williams.

The B And B Show

Leeds United 3 Brighton 1

Leeds boss Gary McAllister says there is still room for improvement after takeing 20 points out of a possible thirty in their first ten games of the season. If they can continue this trend there is no doubt Leeds will be up their fighting come the end of the season for one of those all important promotion places.

Two goals just before half-time helped move Leeds to third in the table, inflicting a first away defeat of the season on Brighton in the process.
Luciano Becchio got the first, firing home from eight yards at the second attempt, before Jermaine Beckford headed in Fabian Delph's cross.

Beckford added a third in injury time, calmly finishing with Delph again providing the assist.
Glenn Murray got a late consolation from 12 yards for Brighton with the last kick of the game on 93 minutes..

Good Run Ends

Peterboro Utd 2 Leeds United 0

There can be no doubt that the better team won and this was confirmed by Gary McAllister in his post match interview. This is a wake up call for Leeds and it's how they react will define their season.

Goals from George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith earn Peterborough a victory that checks Leeds strong start to the League One season. Leeds lost first choice goalkeeper David Lucas in the warm up and Boyd added to their problems by slotting his side ahead two minutes after the break.

Luciano Becchio's equaliser was ruled out for offside and Andy Robinson saw a late effort cleared by Tom Williams. In stoppage time Mackail-Smith tucked home Boyd's lay-off to seal the win.

Peterborough: Lewis, Martin, Morgan, Zakuani, Williams, Green (Whelpdale 72), Coutts (Lee 83), Hyde, Boyd, Mackail-Smith, Batt.
Subs Not Used: McKeown, Westwood, Rendell.

Great Run Continues

Leeds United 1 Hereford Utd 0

Andy Robinson hit a 72nd-minute winner to give Leeds victory and leave Hereford still without an away point. The win was Leeds' sixth straight in all competitions but Hereford's massed defence, marshalled by on-loan ( Bolton Wanderers ) Bruno N'Gotty, made it difficult for them.

Jermaine Beckford went close with three good chances for Leeds before Robinson decided the match. He drove home the rebound after Bulls keeper Darren Randolph could only parry Luciano Becchio's header.

Leeds: Lucas, Richardson, Marques, Telfer, White (Hughes 79), Howson, Delph, Douglas, Robinson (Snodgrass 85), Beckford, Becchio.
Subs Not Used: Ankergren, Prutton, Kilkenny.

Carling Cup Draw

Leeds have been drawn away to either Derby County or Brighton in the 4th round of this seasons Carling Cup. With both Liverpool and Tottenham still in the hat along with Derby / Brighton Leeds can feel pleased that they avoided the big guns although as Gary McAllister said their fans might think otherwise.

The ties will be played in the week commencing the 10th Nov.

Change Of Flight Plans

Some slight changes have been made to our flight plans for our trip to the Huddersfield Town game on the 15th November. The flight to East Midlands has now been pulled by Ryanair and instead we will be flying into Birmingham. The only downside to this is that we will be on a bus for two hours on our journey up to Leeds as opposed to the shorter journey from East Midlands.

Also the journey on the way back will depart from the Marriott in Leeds at 10am ( which is 1 1/4 hrs later than usual ) with the flight for Shannon timed for departure at 3.00 pm. We will confirm these times nearer the departure dates.

Leeds Up To Third

Carlisle 0 Leeds United 2

Despite the early kick off time of 12.15pm and the long journey up to Carlisle, Leeds fans travelled home with three points in the bags and big smiles on their faces. This was because Leeds produced one of their best displays of the season and are now up to third in the table.
Luciano Becchio and Jermaine Beckford ended Carlisle's 100% home record.

Becchio reacted quickly to score when Neil Kilkenny's corner flew across the face of goal and was poked back into the danger area by Paul Telfer. Frazer Richardson rattled the Carlisle crossbar with a superb 25-yard effort in the 80th minute.

And Beckford sealed Leeds win when substitute Robert Snodgrass found space on the left flank and crossed for the striker to score from six yards out.

Carlisle: Williams, Raven, Livesey, Keogh, Horwood, Taylor (Bridges 63), Bridge-Wilkinson, Thirlwell, Hackney, Carlton (Myrie-Williams 72), Graham (Dobie… Read more

Beckford Stars

Swindon Town 1 Leeds United 3

Jermaine Beckford's classy double saw 10-man Leeds beat Swindon in a fiery clash at the County Ground. Defender Alan Sheehan was sent off for a two footed foul on Jon-Paul McGovern after just eight minutes in a match that eventually saw seven bookings. Garry McAllister in his post match interview agreed with the referee in giving Sheehan his red card. He said that if he had'nt got the ball he could have caused serious injury to the player as his two feet were off the ground when makeing the tackle.

But Beckford put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes with a drilled shot before Simon Cox levelled for Swindon. Neil Kilkenny's 30-yard free-kick put Leeds back in front after half-time then Beckford made sure of victory. Leeds are now up to fourth in the table and more importantly are hitting form.

Leeds Hit Five

Leeds United 5 Crewe Alexander 2

Leeds grabbed their first home league win of the season by crushing Crewe. Fabian Delph got Leeds' opener with a 30-yard shot and Alan Sheehan grabbed a second with a long range effort before Jonathan Douglas extended the lead.

Jermaine Beckford headed in a fourth and Andy Robinson curled in the fifth before Leeds' Lubo Michalik was sent off in injury-time for violent conduct. Crewe's Calvin Zola headed in from the free-kick and Eugene Bopp added another consolation goal with a deflection.

McAllister will have been over the moon with this performance except the last four minutes of injury time where Leeds went to sleep and had a silly sending off which could yet prove costly. Yes up and running at home. Now to keep it going.

Leeds: Lucas, Richardson, Michalik, Telfer, Sheehan, Hughes, Kilkenny, Douglas, Delph, Beckford, Becchio.

Subs: Ankergren, Prutton, Howson, Robinson, Snodgrass.

Poor Start Continues

Leeds United 2 Bristol Rovers 2

Leeds' stuttering start to the new season continued as they were held 2-2 at Elland Road by Bristol Rovers.A Steve Elliott own goal had given Leeds an early lead, but Rickie Lambert and Daryl Duffy struck to put Rovers ahead at the break.

Jermain Beckford, though, was on hand to strike a late equaliser and rescue a point for Gary McAllister's men.Compared to the great start to last season this has been very disappointing opening few games for die hard Leeds fans. We should be winning home games yet in our two to date we have only managed one point. This is hardly promotion form and although early in the season gives us cause for concern.

Once again Beckford came to the rescue but if he were to get injured one dreads to think how we would cope.

Back On Track

Leeds United 4 Crystal Palace 0

Rampant Leeds crushed stuttering Championship side Crystal Palace at Elland Road to reach the third round of the Carling Cup. Leeds took the lead with their first real attack when Jermaine Beckford flicked on a long ball for Jonathan Douglas to lob over Darryl Flahavan.

Neil Kilkenny then crossed for Beckford to head home and, soon after half-time, Luciano Becchio nodded past Flahavan. The Argentinian was replaced by Enoch Showunmi who curled home the fourth. Hopefully this victory will kick start Leeds season especially as they have three home league games to come in the next two weeks.

Another Setback For McAllister

Yeovil Town 1 Leeds United 1

Four points from three games at the start of the season is a long way from our stat of last season and the signs are getting out of this division will be no easy task.Yeovil striker Lloyd Owusu's penalty rebound cancelled out Luciano Becchio's first-minute strike to deny Leeds victory in a fiery game at Huish Park. Becchio outpaced Terry Skiverton and fired a low shot past keeper Asmir Begovic to put the visitors ahead.

But Yeovil replied when Paul Warne was fouled by Paul Huntington and although Owusu's spot-kick was saved by Casper Ankergren, Owusu netted the follow-up. The Glovers almost won it late on with Gavin Tomlin twice going close.

Yeovil: Begovic, Peltier, Skiverton, Forbes, Jones, Downes (Roberts 52), Way (Alcock 90), Murtagh, Schofield (Owusu 15), Tomlin, Warne.
Subs Not Used: Wagenaar, McCollin.

Bad Start To Season At Elland Road

Leeds United 0 Oldham Athletic 2

Oldham followed up their impressive comeback against Millwall last week with yet another surprise away win over Leeds thanks to two second half Chris Taylor goals. Gary McAllister fielded the same starting eleven that beat Scunthorpe United last weekend but they played second fiddle to a more determined Oldham side.

As is usual in these cases Man of The Match was ex Leeds player Sean Gregan who had the proverbial stormer in the heart of the Oldham defence. In fact Leeds were toothless up front and Beckford had a very quite game by his standards. Once again McAllister side have been brought crashing down to earth and as was the case last season it's going to take a mighty effort to get out of this division.

SPINKY IS OUR NEW PRESIDENT

Following a very successful AGM on Tuesday night last, one of our great club members Francis (Spinky) White was elected President for the coming season. He follows in the footsteps of Mike McNamara, Steve Underwood and Kevin Barry in receiving our newly acquired chain of office. He's a great character and it's a just reward for his loyal service to Ennislusc. All the outgoing officers were re-elected and an attendance of 28 members ( 6 excused) gives a clear indication of the strength of the club at present.

On the playing side Leeds had a very convincing 5-2 win away to Chester City in the 1st round of the Carling Cup. Highlight of the televised game was a hat trick from Jermaine Beckford which is hopefully a good sign of things to come. Also the performance of 18 year old Fabian Delph was great to see as he showed he's a… Read more

Great Start To Season For Macca

Scunthorpe United 1 Leeds United 2

Gary McAllister's side are favourites to take a place in the Championship at the end of the season
and they started their push for promotion in style by coming from behind to win at Glanford Park. Leeds gave debuts to Enoch Showunmi, Andy Robinson, Jamie Snodgrass and had Paul Telfer and new Argentinian signing Luciano Becchio on the bench. There was an end-to-end feel to the opening stages of the League One contest and Scunthorpe had a goal disallowed on 28 minutes after Izzy Iriekpen had headed home Grant McCann's free-kick.

Scunthorpe grabbed the first goal of the campaign on 57 minutes when new signing Gary Hooper escaped from Rui Marques' attentions and fired past Casper Angerkren. Leeds were level just four minutes later when Showunmi rose to meet fellow debutant Snodgrass' free-kick to head beyond Lillis.Chances arrived at both ends before Leeds struck decisively 10 minutes… Read more

AGM AND LEEDS ON SKY TUESDAY 12th AUG

Tuesday next sees our AGM for the season 2008/9 take place in Moroney's Bar Market Street Ennis and as Leeds are playing Chester City in the Carling Cup on Sky Sports at 7.45pm a big turnout is expected on the night. Among the issues to be decided will be election of officers and in particular the election of a club President. Already there has been canvassing going on between rivals Slim Corry and Spinky White for the all important votes and a close contest is promised.

Also down for discussion will be the club trips this season to Elland Road and any other business that the members may wish to air. It will be nice to see Leeds on the TV early on in the season and of course to meet all the members old and new. So do come along on the night, Marching On Together.

Win In The West

Galway United 0 Leeds United 2

On what was one of the coldest evenings of the year two Jermaine Beckford goals sealed a good win for a near full strength Leeds team in Terryland Park last week. Ennislusc was well represented at the game with 19 members in attendance.(Official Att 2,745) While it was basically the same Leeds team as last season the addition of Swansea's Player of the Year Andy Robinson to the left wing is indeed a great signing.

If one had seen the first half it would have been hard to believe that Leeds were favourites for the League 1 title this season and Galway Utd were languashing at the bottom of the Eircom Premier League. However one must remember that Galway are already half way through their season while Leeds are in heavy pre season training.

If one was to comment this early on in the season it would… Read more

Our Ultra Man

On Sunday next Ennislusc member John Galvin will be the only Irish man talking part in the British Mountain Trail Championship which is run over thirty miles. Yes while many of you are sleeping off the effects of the night before our John will be at the starting line for 9am. John plans to run it in around four hours ten minutes which would be an outstanding achievement considering the race was won in three hours forty minutes last year.

Not alone does one have to run thirty miles but it's all off road terrain and one has to plot their own course much like orienteering. For the Ennistymon CBS school teacher running is a passion and while all of Clare will be heading for Thurles on Sunday morning spare a thought for John as he scaled the peaks of England. Good luck Joh from all your friends at Ennislusc.
