This first leg play off game at Carrow Road was a drab affair with little chances and both teams seemed content to settle for a draw. Whether it was nerves or the tense situation given what was at stake this certainly will go down as a dire game. Following the International break both sides had poor finishes to the season especially Leeds who looked odds on for promotion given their form before the break. Norwich won just two of their final seven league games scraping into sixth position while Leeds managed just two wins in eight to blow their chances of going up automatically.

What a disastrous end to the season for Farke and his boys. Now it's the dreaded play offs with Norwich City away on Sunday 12th May in the 1st leg at Carrow Road. Leeds went out with a whimper today and on this recent form one can honestly say we will not be a threat on present form. Leeds went into the game knowing they had to win and Ipswich lose to all-but relegated Huddersfield to secure automatic promotion. However even the most optimistic Leeds supporter never doubted that The Tractor Boys would win but they certainly thought Leeds would put the pressure on with a home win. Alas not to be.

It was with deep shock and sadness that on Wednesday last, news filtered through of the passing of our great friend and ex President of Ennislusc Joe ( Josie) Hester. I had only met Josie in The Market a few weeks back outside O Connor's Newsagents as he collected his weekly Clare Champion and the Connaught Tribune. A proud native of Mayo most of us got to know Josie in St Flannan's College where he taught French, and was well liked by all the students that had the pleasure of having him as a teacher. Indeed in my time in St Flannan's I had no idea that Josie was an avid Leeds supporter and was a mine of history on the club. It was only years later his great friend and teaching colleague the late John Finn said to me that Josie would like to join the supporters club.

Leeds went to Loftus Road knowing a win would put them four points ahead of Ipswich all be with two more games played but they just capitulated and were deservedly trashed. Now they require Hull and Coventry to do them a big favour vs Ipswich and bring it down to the last game of the season.This is certainly clutching at straws in my opinion.The home side took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes through a moment of brilliance from Ilias Chair. Leeds got off to the worst possible start when Boro scored after seven minutes when Isaiah Jones finished after a terrible defensive mix up. Farke's men responded quickly when seven minutes later Crysencio Summerville ( Championship Player Of The Year) scored from the spot after a clumsy foul by Anfernee Dijksteel on Georginio Rutter. And four minutes later Leeds hit the front when Patrick Bamford chested home Junior Firpo's brilliant cross from the left. This was the tonic Leeds needed but it was the home side who were exerting all the pressure and deservedly equalised on the half hour mark.

Leeds suffered a shock defeat, their first of the year in The Championship to relegation threatened Blackburn Rovers. The home side started well with Rovers keeper Pears keeping out first-half strikes from Willy Gnonto and Connor Roberts. Midfielder Ilia Gruev missed a great chance when heading wide of the near post after good work on the left by Crysencio Summerville. Irish International Sammy Szmodics nearly put Rovers ahead five minutes before the break when he intercepted a shocking back pass from Crysencio Summerville but Meslier made an excellent save.

Leeds had only drawn with Sunderland four days previously at Elland Road and shockingly had only one shot on target in the whole game. On a very frustrating night for Leeds they failed to break down a very stubborn Black Cats defence despite having 69 per cent possession but unfortunately had only one shot on target. This from a team that's unbeaten at home this season and has scored 44 goals in 20 home games. It's like the pressure has got to the players and following on from the Coventry defeat there was surprisingly no major uplift from the team at a packed Elland Road.

With Ipswich losing in the early kick off Leeds could have gone top but The Skyblues had different ideas at the CBS Arena as they ran out deserved winners against a lack luster Leeds side. On nine minutes Coventry took the lead when Wright broke forward down the left before having a shot excellently saved by Illan Meslier. Unfortunately Leeds failed to clear from the resulting corner and Simms nodded home from close range. Three minutes later the home side could have doubled their lead when Callum O'Hare shot was brilliantly saved by Meslier.

Leeds got off to a wonderful start against The Tigers when Sam Byram got on the score sheet in the ninth minute. He headed home at the back post after Summerville's effort had been save by Hull keeper Allsop and fell kindly for him to score. However Patrick Bamford should have doubled the lead midway through the first half but somehow managed to put James's low left-wing cross over from six yards with the goal at his mercy. It was a shocking miss and Farke seems to be too loyal to the striker.

Talk about getting out of jail for Leeds but in the end a wonderful point which felt like a win.The Hornets started brightly but it was against the run of play that Leeds should have taken the lead when Daniel Bachmann made a brilliant reaction save to keep out Summerville's strike from the edge of the box. The home side took the lead on 31 mins when Dennis's powerful drive was excellently parried by Leeds keeper Illan Meslier but unfortunately the ball fell to Bayo who lashed home the rebound on the volley.

With eight minutes remaining to the break Leeds got back on level terms despite playing second fiddle to a very determined and well drilled Watford side. This was always going to be a tough game for Leeds as The Lions have always proved a tough nut to crack for the home side. Early doors it was all Leeds but it took until the 33rd minute for the home crowd to relax when they took a deserved lead. Italy International forward Wilfried Gnonto firing home left-footed from 20 yards past a stranded Sarkic to send the home crowd into full voice. Sarkic pulled off a fabulous diving save to deny Crysencio Summerville but Leeds without doubt should have been awarded a penalty just before half time.

Leeds travelled to Hillsborough Stadium for their second Yorkshire derby in six days , their fourth game in ten days and thankfully came away with the points. The Owls who had won their previous four games in The Championship were always a potential banana skin for The Whites but on this occasion Leeds dominated proceeding from the off. However against the run of play the home side nearly took the lead on 16 minutes but for a marvelous save from Illan Meslier. Marvin Johnson's corner fell to Djeidi Gassama and his close-range effort was kept out by the leg of Meslier when he looked certain to score.

Leeds magnificent winning league run came to and end at The John Smith Stadium when The Terriers earned a deserved point despite being down to ten men for the entire second half. This Yorkshire derby was always going to be a banana skin for The Whites considering they were also after playing an extremely tough FA Cup game vs Chelsea on Wednesday night in London. For all their 79 per cent possession Leeds managed just two shots on target in the entire game which is a shocking stat given their numerical advantage for half the game.

Leeds were back at Home Park once again after facing The Pilgrims for the third time since the New Year after meeting them twice in the FA Cup. The visitors were out of the blocks straight away with their high pressing game and took the lead on ten minutes with a brilliant piece of play from Gnonto. Rutter kicked a hopeful high pass into space behind the defence and Italy international Gnonto's superb first touch knocked the ball beyond Lewis Gibson and he shoot low into the bottom corner off the post. Leeds maintained their brilliant start to 2024 in the league with a seventh straight win at the Swansea.com Stadium. Ironically this has coincided with a return to form of the much maligned Patrick Bamford who I must confess that I have been one of those critics. When Patrick is fully fit and in form he's a superb target man but over the last two seasons due to injury and loss of form we haven't seen him at his best. However just before kick off he was injured in the warm up and suddenly we were without our striker who has scored four goals and an assist in his last six league games.

Leeds welcomed The Canaries to Elland Road with both teams in good form and striving for promotion places. Norwich had been unbeaten in their previous five games while following this victory Leeds created some club history in winning their first five games in a calendar year. They are also unbeaten in their last 15 homes games which is a fantastic achievement given they are well below par on their travels on the road. While not being a spectacular game Leeds dug out the win and that's all that counts.
