Farewell To Our Dear Friend Mike

On Friday last, news filtered through just after 5pm that our great friend, member and ex President Mike McNamara had gone to his eternal rest. Mac as he was known to all of us had only been in hospital for little over a week so it came as a tremendous shock. Ironically at the club AGM a week previous, his best friend Slim Corry was elected President, something which Slim took great pride in telling Mac on visiting him in hospital.

To us Mac was a true gent whose smile and wit we will miss. But most of all it's his company on our trips to Leeds or watching live matches in Moroneys(when he would give full commentaries on the failings of his beloved Leeds)that we will miss most of all. When the club was formed in Nuggys ( Fafa Considines in Parnell St) in 2001 the first man at the… Read more

Superb AGM And New Club President

Our AGM on Friday night last will go down as one of the best we have held since our inception in 2001 with over forty members turning up. On the night we also showed the Leeds United DVD of the seasons highlights which culminated in that never to be forgotten last game of the season at home to Bristol City. The night began with outgoing President Francis Spinky White stepping down after his two year term and his successor is one of the clubs founders Cyril Slim Corry. Outgoing Chairman Steven Underwood and excellent Secretary Paul Nihill were returned unopposed but there was a change in the Treasurers position when Johnny Moroney stepped down.

We have new Joint Treasurers in Dom O Rourke and Kevin Greene and it was also agreed that the club would look into the possibility of setting up a saving scheme for members going on trips with… Read more

Promotion Celebration And Club AGM

Now that we have secured promotion from League 1 after three years of trying and nearly threw it away on the last day of the season we decided it was time to celebrate the event. Only this time there will be no stress or anxious moments wondering if we are going to get three points as we intend to watch the clubs DVD of last seasons highlights. Of course outside of promotion most peoples highlight will be beating Man U at Old Trafford in the FA Cup and why not says you !

Friday the 18th of June has been chosen for the celebrations as the Championship fixtures are released on Thursday 17th and we hope to pick our fixtures for our proposed trips on the night. The club AGM is also being held on that date and hopefully there will be some new blood coming forward for the positions. The workload… Read more

Gary And Basil Go For Oscar

On Sunday next in Doora the Clare Soccer League team will endeavor to win the Oscar Traynor Trophy for the second time in their history (their fist success was in 2005) when they entertain the Wexford League with kick off at 2.30pm. Part of the squad are Ennislusc members Pat Basil Whelan ( First Aid and Kitman) and Gary Collins who is one of the best young midfield players in the county. Gary's dad Noel himself a Ennislusc member was one of the best midfielders ever to line out for the county and will no doubt be in Doora on Sunday supporting the boys. When Davie Russell leads out the team on Sunday they will be thinking of their late great manager Hughie Kelly who sadly passed away little over three weeks ago and has been a driving force in Clare soccer for over 25 years. Indeed Hughie managed the… Read more

I Believe In Miracles Now

Leeds United 2 Bristol Rovers 1

A full house at Elland Road, a win would guarantee us automatic promotion and playing a Bristol team that was only playing for pride it looked a sure bet. However us loyal Leeds fans are not allowed to dream or think like that and sure enough our day turned into a roller coaster of human emotions. Any one of us who wondered about our heart need not worry as it got a thorough examination on Saturday afternoon.

All week Paul Nuggy Nihill and Dom O Rourke were trying their best to download the match from their laptops and transfer it to the TV in Moroneys for all to see. On Saturday morning we looked to have it all sorted as we had pictures and sound but come three bells the Gods or rather network went down and we had only commentary. Our first shock was to… Read more

It's In Our Own Hands Now

Charlton Athletic 1 Leeds United 0

Well now we know it's all down to the last game of the season at home to Bristol Rovers where a win will guarantee us automatic promotion. At Christmas and eleven points ahead at the top this was the furthest things from any Leeds fans mind, that we'd be in this position but thankfully we are considering the terrible form we have been in since beating Man U. Now full house at Elland Road next Saturday and it's in our own hands and being honest we are grateful to be in this position.

For the Charlton game Leeds manager Simon Grayson made two changes to his starting line-up with Shane Lowry returned in place of the injured Ben Parker and Micky Doyle returned to the midfield in place of on loan Arsenal teenager Sanchez Watt with Bradley Johnson moving to the left of midfield.

A late goal… Read more

Super Win On Our 21st Trip

Leeds United 4 MKDons 1

On what was the warmest day in Britain this year and on our 21st Ennislusc trip Grayson's men put up a tremendous performance and now are two wins away from automatic promotion. We had 22 members on the trip and it goes without saying that a good time was had by all. We returned via Stansted on this occasion which involved a near five hour journey but we stopped for lunch and beer in a quaint English village and this did'nt make it seem so long. Unfortunately four of our members who were booked on the trip had to drop out at the last minute and here we would like to pass our deepest sympathy to Gerry Sheridan who's dad Aoner was buried yesterday.

Luiciano Becchio fired home on 13 minutes at the near post to open the scoring before Dean Lewington was left unmarked to volley… Read more

Do They Want Promotion Or What

Gillingham 3 Leeds United 2

Gillingham boosted their survival hopes with a deserved victory over a disappointing Leeds at Priestfield. This has not been a happy hunting ground for United and after three successive wins hopes were high for the three points as Grayson named an unchanged side from the Carlisle game. Nothing could be further from the truth as Leeds found themselves three down after 33 minutes much to the amazement of both home and away fans.

Adam Miller headed the home side ahead on 9 minutes before turning provider on the half hour for Mark Bentley to nod in a second. Two minutes later the rampant Gills made it three when Leeds captain Richard Naylor headed into his own net.

Luciano Becchio's close-range shot on the stroke of half time and Jermaine Beckford's late penalty, after he had been fouled by Bentley, gave Leeds hope but the Gills held on… Read more

The Ball Is Back In Our Court

Carlisle Utd 1 Leeds United 3

Luciano Becchio scored a brace as Leeds saw off Carlisle to reclaim the second automatic promotion spot in League One as Millwall were held to a draw a Yeovil. Simon Grayson dropped top scored Jermaine Beckford to the bench following his gesture to fans when taken off in the Southend game and this gave Becchio and Gradel their chance in the spotlight and they certainly took their opportunity. Gradel has been in superb form over the last three games and he gave another man of the match performance tonight.

Becchio tapped in on 13 minutes for Leeds after Carlisle keeper Adam Collin spilled a Robert Snodgrass free-kick. Carlisle levelled against the run of play just on the stroke of half time when Richard Keogh headed in a free-kick from Leeds old boy Ian Harte.

United sealed the win after the restart with Max Gradel heading in… Read more

The Dream Lives On

Leeds United 2 Southend 0

Leeds scored two second-half goals to boost their promotion hopes and with Charlton and Swindon losing they are now only one point behind Millwall with five games to play.

Out-of-sorts striker Jermaine Beckford was booed by the Elland Road faithful after failing to challenge for the ball and responded with an angry gesture. I think we have seen the last of Beckford as a Leeds player after this season because his heart is not in it and he has lost the genuine supporter with his lack luster performances.

Max Gradel opened the scoring with a shot that took a deflection off Pat Baldwin before Luciano Becchio headed the second close to full-time. Matt Paterson went close for Southend in the first half with a clever lob. Club member John Galvin was over for the game and he echoed the crowds sentiments with Beckford and said that it… Read more

It's Squeeky Bum Time

Yeovil 1 Leeds United 2

Leeds ended a run of four successive defeats with victory at Yeovil to boost their automatic promotion hopes although unfortunately all the other top five teams won also.Manager Grayson made two changes from the Swindon game with Max Gradel ( who had a super game)and Neil Collins replacing Grella and Lowery in an effort to bring some life and spirit to the team. It certainly worked in the first half when Leeds were totally dominant but with an ineffective Beckford up front (who at times seemed disinterested) the second half belonged to the home side.

Richard Naylor's looping back-post header on 29 minutes from a Jonny Howson cross gave United the lead with their first goal in over six hours of football. Five minutes later it looked like we were in seventh heaven when the Leeds captain doubled our advantage with another header from a Neil… Read more

Words Just Fail Me

Leeds United 0 Swindon Town 3

There is something drastically wrong at Elland Road and if looks like Grayson has lost the dressing room as to leak three goals at home to Swindon would have been unthinkable at kick off but that where we found ourselves after 55 minutes. We had a golden opportunity of going clear in second place after Millwall drew at home on Friday night but instead we now find ourselves in fourth position with Swindon now up in the automatic play off position. I have not got the answers but I do know if we don't go up this season the club will find it hard to get supporters into Elland Road next season.

Billy Paynter scored twice as Swindon went second in League One with victory over DISGRACEFUL Leeds X1 at Elland Road.We have now gone 385 minutes without a goal and lie 11 points behind leaders… Read more

We're Doomed To The Playoffs

Norwich City 1 Leeds United 0

After two very poor results Simon Grayson finally bit the bullet and made five changes to his starting X1 for our game with legue leaders Norwich at Carrow Road. On loan Neill Collins came in at centre-back for his debut, Shane Higgs replaced calamity Casper Ankergren in goal, Villa loan man Shane Lowry returned at left-back, Neil Kilkenny was recalled to the centre of midfield, and Jermaine Beckford returned from injury to the front-line but had no effect on the match what so ever.

The only pity with Becks is he was'nt allowed to leave after requesting a transfer as since then he has'nt kicked a ball in anger for us. Yes there was an improvement from Monday nights performance but in truth we never looked like scoring and now lie level on points with Millwall but with a better goal difference on one goal !

Disgrace To The Jersey

Leeds United 0 Millwall 2

It pains me to say but in over forty years supporting Leeds this was the worst display I have ever witnessed and showed utter disrespect by the players for the famed white shirt. While Millwall have been a bogey team to us over the years and already beat us in the league at the New Den they bookies still saw fit to quote them at 3/1 to win at Elland Road. Gererous odds indeed for a team that won seven away games out of last eleven.

What went wrong can only be answered by Grayson and the players but the were out fought in all positions and showed no desire what so ever to get anything out of the game. The second goal typifies this where substitute Shaun Batt beat Hughes and Naylor with ease and then beat Casper at his near post. With Norwich next up… Read more

Back To Earth With A Bang

Southampton 1 Leeds United 0

Three wins in our last 13 league games tells it's own story and after the high of Tuesday nights win at Tranmere it was back to earth with a bang today. Worse still we did not have a shot on goal until injury time and worse still it was our ex left back Dan Harding that scored the all important goal. With Norwich winning and stretching their lead at the top to seven points it's now safe to bet we are fighting for the automatic second spot. Lucky for us Charlton and Colchester were beaten and the gap is still five points to third spot. However our next game is vs Millwall who are in 4th position and it's live on Sky on Monday week the 22nd of March and it's a must win home game for us now.

Leeds promotion hopes suffered another setback as Dan… Read more

Good Gracious Four Goals

Tranmere Rovers 1 Leeds United 4

United boosted their hopes of automatic promotion from League One with a deserved win over struggling Tranmere. Robert Snodgrasses angled free-kick gave Leeds a ninth-minute lead when his shot cum cross deceived everyone and end in the net. And it's a change of luck that was long overdue.

Jermaine Beckford's 16th-minute penalty doubled Leeds lead before John Welsh pulled one back for Tranmere three minutes later with a low drive from twelve yards. Then just before half time Becks set up Luciano Becchio to headed in a third before Beckford expertly lobbed Rovers keeper Luke Daniels following a superb through ballby Michael Doyle to move Leeds five points clear of third-placed Charlton.

It was tremendously pleasing to finally see Leeds back to something like their best and with Southampton away next up let's hope the form continues.

We're In Dire Straits

Leeds United 1 Brentford 1

The nightmare goes on it seems and I'm beginning to think that Grayson is not up to the mark. After the start we had we should be home and hosed having been eleven points ahead of Norwich and now find ourselves seven points behind them and the chasing pack including Charlton and Colchester closing fast. I really fear for our chances of automatic promotion at this stage and just could not endure another play off scenario.

Getting back to the game Jermaine Beckford scored his first goal in seven games to salvage a point but the draw leave us only two points above third-placed Charlton. Sam Wood missed a great chance to put Brentford ahead when through one-on-one but Casper Ankergren denied him with a good save.
Leeds with Howson and McSheffrey playing well in midfield seemed well in control but the Bees snatched the lead when Ben… Read more

Derby Stalemate

Huddersfield Town 2 Leeds United

Gary Roberts 85 minute goal rescued a point for promotion-chasing Huddersfield in an entertaining west Yorkshire derby with second-placed Leeds.
Anthony Pilkington's deflected shot put the home side ahead in a first half they largely dominated and as manager Lee Clarke stated after the game they should have wrapped it up in the first half such were the chances the squandered.

Leeds got a lifeline on 61 minutes when Johnny Howson headed in a Robert Snodgrass cross to bring an improved Leeds level with half an hour to go. Then five minutes later the traveling Leeds fans were in seventh heaven when Luciano Becchio headed his 11th of the season to put United ahead and on course to beat their bogey team and close in on Norwich at the top of League 1.

However that was not to be and Grayson's boys had to be satisfied with… Read more

Finally A Win

Leeds United 2 Oldham 2

The Leeds fans stayed away last night in their droves, much to do with the freezing weather as to the recent form of Grayson's boys poor form. However it was Luciano Becchio who scored twice in eight second-half minutes to lift the tension at Elland Road as Leeds got their promotion bid back on course.

Becchio was left with a 53rd minute tap-in when Jermaine Beckford cut in from the left and his shot was parried by goalkeeper Dean Brill to the Argentine who scored his ninth goal of the season.
Seven minutes later Robert Snodgrass supplied a pinpoint cross for Becchio to head past Oldham keeper Dean Brill.

This was a good performance from Leeds who needed a big result against Oldham who had beaten them in their previous two meetings and sets them up well for their local derby with Huddersfiels at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Can It Get Any Worse

Leeds United 1 Brighton 1

A 95th-minute get out of jail goal from substitute Robert Snodgrass salvaged a point for stuttering United against relegation-threatened Brighton. Glenn Murray's 77th minute penalty, which came after he was upended by home captain Richard Naylor, had Brighton boss Gus Poyet eyeing a winning return to Leeds.

However Brighton defender Adam Virgo was then sent off for a foul on Max Gradel and Leeds sensed they could get at least a point. And in the fifth minute of injury-time their prayers were answered when Patrick Kisnorbo nodded down Gradel's cross for Snodgrass to rifle home. Having dominated the game Leeds just seem to have lost their scoring touch up front and no more so than Jermaine Beckford.

We are now clinging on to second place but with away games at Norwich,Carlisle,Southampton and Charlton to come we will be doing particularly well to gain automatic promotion. And… Read more
