Men Against Boys

Leeds United 0 Cardiff City 4

Jay Bothroyd (who after a horror tackle on Becchio in the first half should not have been on the field) struck twice as Cardiff City ruthlessly took apart Leeds United to go joint-top of the Championship and score their biggest ever victory at Elland Road. A terrible up between fit again goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Alex Bruce let in Bothroyd to give Cardiff the lead with his first of the night after 22 minutes.

Michael Chopra beat the offside trap ( BUT REPLAYS SHOW HE WAS IN AN OFFSIDE POSITION ON RECEIVING THE BALL BUT WHAT THE HECK WE ARE ONLY CLUTCHING AT STRAWS) to score the second from the edge of the box, before Bothroyd guided in a Chris Burke cross for his 11th of the season.

Left back and ex Celtic defender Lee Naylor's long-range strike rounded off an emphatic win for… Read more

Super Strike Sinks Strachan's Men

Middlesbrough 1 Leeds United 2

Striker Luciano Becchio scored a stunning winner as Leeds added to Middlesbrough's problems with victory at the Riverside. Davide Somma opened the scoring for the visitors with a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner. Ex Rangers striker Kris Boyd nipped in front of Richard Naylor to prod the equalizer just after half time from Matthew Bates inviting cross. But our new hero Becchio lashed home a fine volley from Bradley Johnson's cutback to secure all three points for Leeds.

Boro fans greeted the final whistle with a crescendo of boos after a defeat which leaves them in 20th place, just one point above the Championship relegation zone. The following day ex Leeds hero Gordan Strachan was sacked as Boro manager after their horrendous start to the season. Sad to hear but that's football in today's world.

Foxs Prove Bogey Team Once Again

Leeds United 1 Leicester City 2

Leicester withstood a late Leeds rally to win at Elland Road (their second this season as already beaten Leeds in Carling Cup at Elland Road in September) and give Sven-Goran Eriksson his first Foxes win. On-loan defender Kyle Naughton gave Leicester the lead after 63 minutes when his deflected long-range effort looped over goalkeeper Jason Brown.

Substitute Steve Howard ( he seems to always score against us,this is his third consecutive winner against United) doubled the visitors' advantage with a neat finish after good work from Andy King. Once again Luciano Becchio pulled one back with seven minutes remaining but try as we might we were unable to find an equalizer. It was mistakes at the back once again that cost us and unless we shore up our defense we won't be challenging for a top six position as was our dream at the… Read more

Tractor Boys Plough Through United

Ipswich Town 2 Leeds United 1

Leeds made four changes from Tuesdays terrible defeat to Preston but once again our defense was at fault after Snodgrass had got us back into the game with 13 minutes remaining. Tommy Smith turned from villain to hero for Roy Keane's Ipswich as they saw off 10-man Leeds. But when Smith and Gareth McAuley both jumped for the same ball, Leeds won possession and the ball was played out to Robert Snodgrass, who equalize.

Guess who wasn't a happy camper on the Ipswich bench but due to more poor defending from Leeds they got the three points with seven minutes remaining. Smith was never meant to start the game, but got his chance when Irish International Darren O'Dea was injured in the warm-up. Ipswich's first goal came when on loan Spurs man Jake Livermore slotted a perfect pass through to ex Wigan forward Jason Scotland… Read more

Speechless

Leeds United 4 Preston North End 6

To say this was an embarrasment is an understatement and one hopes the players feel the same after letting down the supporters with this horror show. Indeed it was the first time EVER that a team had scored six goals at Elland Road and it's time now that Grayson stood up and confronted his problems in the back line. True Casper Schmichel is out injured and Shane Higgs didn't cover himself in glory but our back four was torn apart once more this season. As George Graham our ex manager used say if you sort out the back four the rest will take care of itself.

Preston fought back from 4-1 down to beat Leeds in an extraordinary match. Jon Parkin gave Preston the lead from close range, before headers by Luciano Becchio and Alex Bruce and a double from Davide Somma put Leeds in… Read more

Derby Day Delight

Leeds United 1 Sheffield United 0

Bradley Johnson's 84 minute goal gave Leeds their first win over Sheffield United for 17 years in front of the biggest Championship crowd of the season (33,622). Sheffield are now managed by former Leeds favourite Gary Speed who signed schoolboy forms along with Leeds boss Simon Grayson on the same day in 1984.

After a frantic start Ched Evans thundered an early free-kick into the Leeds wall on the edge of the penalty area, but it was the home side who dominated the first 25 minutes without creating any clear-cut chances. Johnson had Leeds best chance of a dour first half when he directing a superb header towards the top corner, only for Blades goalkeeper Steve Simonsen to push the ball away at full stretch. Former Leeds skipper Lucas Radebe (The Chief) received the biggest cheer thus far when introduced to the crowd during the interval,… Read more

Encouraging Performance Despite Goal Absence

Doncaster Rovers 0 Leeds United 0

It was time for change for United manager Simon Grayson after the midweek drubbing at Barnsley and he was true to his word as Leeds went into another local derby at the Keepmoat Stadium. Out through injury were Connolly and Fede Bessone, Luciano Becchio and Richard Naylor were both dropped (or as we were told rested), and there was a full debut for ex Cardiff and Rangers winger Ross McCormack.

Doncaster began the game the brighter, pinning Leeds back straight away with their intricate passing, but when they first came close to getting on the score sheet, it was by more direct means. Bradley Johnson fouled James Coppinger wide on the right, and when Martin Woods fired in a free-kick, Somma failed to connect as he tried to clear the ball, forcing a fumbled save from Shane Higgs.

Within minutes David Somma (who has impressed this… Read more

Disaster At Oakwell

Barnsley 5 Leeds United 2

Barnsley tore through Leeds with a rampant second-half performance that takes them up to seventh in the Championship and quietened the 7,000 traveling Leeds supporters. Leeds got off to a dream start when Jonny Howson's crisp strike put Leeds ahead on three minutes before debutant Garry O'Connor fired the Tykes level. There was a suspicion of a handball in the lead up to the goal but in his after match analysis Simon Grayson dismissed this as clutching at straws and instead said that his players had let down the huge Leeds support tonight.

Jim O'Brien pounced on a loose ball to put the hosts in front before Diego Arismendi's finish and Neil Collins' own-goal put the match beyond Leeds. Adam Hammill capped a super performance with a shot for the fifth while Davide Somma's late goal for Leeds was of little consolation.

There is no doubt that… Read more

John Finn Drives To All Ireland Glory

Today in Woodenbridge in The Garden County of Ireland the Ennis Senior Golf Team won the JB Carr All Ireland Title after a titanic struggle with a gallant Galway team. One of the stalwarts of the team is our very own Ennislusc member John Finn and we sincerely congratulate him and his colleagues on such a tremendous achievement. This competition is a Men's Team event for the Over 60's and it is played in the Scotch Foursomes format.

Ennis won on a 3-2 score line with Noel Pyne and Michael Culliney winning on the 19th to ensure victory. Also there shouting on the Ennis men was another Ennislusc member Eoin Doohan ( himself a scratch golfer) and it's said that our anthem Marching On Together got a airing in the bar afterwards. The captain of the Galway team, Jeff Brennan had himself connections with Ennis as in 1955 he won a… Read more

Luciano To The Rescue

Leeds United 2 Swansea 1

Luciano Becchio struck his third goal of the season as Leeds came from behind to beat Swansea at Elland Road. Leeds started with Shane Higgs in goal as Casper Schmichel was ruled out with a ankle injury but his deputy had a excellent game, inspiring Graysons men to their third league victory on the trot. Stephen Dobbie had put Swansea ahead on 13 minutes, slotting home after Richard Naylor (following on from his error in last game vs Watford) misjudged a ball over the top. Just as Swansea struck against the run of play, Leeds almost did in first-half stoppage time when Johnson launched a fierce shot against the bar.

Bradley Johnson smashed Leeds level on 56 mins after Dorus de Vries saved Naylor's point-blank header. And eight minutes later Argentine Becchio fired home from close range to leave the Swans still searching for their first points… Read more

Naylor Makes Amends

Watford 0 Leeds United 1

Leeds captain Richard Naylor hit the winner in his 450th career appearance to end Watford's unbeaten start to the season in a poor game at Vicarage Road. The ex-Ipswich defender prodded home from close range after just six minutes and eased the heartache of his own goal last week.
There was no place in Leeds starting line-up for new signing Ross McCormack who only completed his switch from Cardiff on Friday evening with manager Simon Grayson opting to select the same side that beat Millwall last weekend.

The 45th goal of Naylor's career (he was formerly a forward with Ipswich Town in his younger days) came when the hosts failed to deal with a cross into the box after goalkeeper Scott Loach had tipped Luciano Becchio's header over the bar.
Leeds lost left back Fede Bessone to injury at the break and replaced him with Andy Hughes,… Read more

Just What The Doctor Ordered

Leeds United 3 Millwall 1

Last season Millwall did the double over Leeds and after our stuttering start to the season we we're in confident mood going into today's game.
And things did'nt look good after fifteen minutes when the visitors took the lead when Leeds captain Richard Naylor headed a Steve Morison cross into his own net. Leeds responded well and in a six-minute spell, Luciano Becchio blazed over from just six yards out, Howson hit the post with a shot and Sam was denied on the line by Ward. The equaliser, when it came, was well-deserved, as winger Sam our summer signing from Charlton finished off a good move with a drive from the edge of the area for his third goal of the season and the first conceded by Millwall this campaign.

Neil Collins put a close-range header inches wide from a free-kick, impressive on-loan Arsenal winger Sanchez Watt… Read more

United Survive The Forest Axe

Nottingham Forest 1 Leeds United 1

Leeds had to settle for a point after they fought out a draw at the City Ground much to the disappointment of Forest manager Billy Davis. Forest dominated the first thirty minutes of the game and it's fair to say that Leeds rode their look to be still in contention at that stage.

The home side took a deserved lead when Dexter Blackstock guided in a header from Chris Gunter's cross. Then Robert Earnshaw hit the Leeds post before the visitors slowly worked their way back into the game and equalised through Lloyd Sam's glanced header.

Neil Kilkenny almost snatched a late win for Leeds but saw his shot went narrowly wide. Forest had earlier looked like they would ease to victory after making a storming start to the game - and nearly scoring - in the opening two minutes. Gunter provided a cross which Paul… Read more

Damned By Nigel's Men

Leeds United 1 Derby County 2

There was a disappointing start to the season for Leeds when despite some great pre season performances they failed to bring that form to the first game of the season at home to Nigel Clough's Derby County.

Kris Commons capped an outstanding performance with the winning goal as Derby inflicted the first opening-day defeat on Leeds since 1989 after a exciting contest at Elland Road. The match marked Leeds return to the Championship but Simon Grayson's team struggled with the attacking threat posed by Derby and their 4-2-3-1 formation.

Commons a Welsh International was the outstanding performer, and it was his pass that led to ex Leeds star Rob Hulse's opener, while the 26-year-old struck from the penalty spot after Luciano Becchio had equalised for Leeds following a mistake from Robbie Savage, with all the goals coming in the opening half.

Grayson's team responded within minutes,… Read more

Remembering Mac

Yesterday's game was our first meeting since the passing of our dear friend Mike McNamara better known to all his friends as Mike Mac. He was always a larger than life person at all the televised games and his comments very both humorous and spot on regarding the way Leeds were performing. So it was strange not to hear his voice booming around the bar yesterday followed by bursts of laughter from the boys. However thanks to our excellent secretary Paul Nuggy Nihill the day was not allowed to pass without honoring Mac.

Unbeknown to us Nuggy had written to the editor of the Leeds United match day programme and had sent him a picture of Mike and a tribute to be included in yesterdays programme on sale at Elland Road for the game vs Derby County. The following is what appeared in the programme:

Michael McNamara affectionately known as… Read more

Road Back To Premiership Kicks Off

For the first time in four years Leeds kick off their season back in the Championship at 5.15pm on Saturday evening next at home to Derby County. Better still the game is live on Sky Sports so as usual we will be meeting in Moroneys to enjoy the game and get updates on our trip to Leeds in November. It has been a busy pre season for manager Simon Grayson as he has brought in seven new players to strengthen the squad and he has not ruled out more signings. With Max Gradel and David Somme suspended for the first four games of the season and new signing Billy Paynter and Robert Snodgrass presently on crutches we are left with only Luciano Becchio as a lone striker.

Leeds finished up their pre season fixtures with a home game to Premiership outfit Wolves on Saturday last and emerged 3-1 winners with goals… Read more

The Late Brendan Collins

Ennislusc would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Noel Collins and his son Gary on the death of their father and grandfather Brendan Collins Hazel View, Rathfoland, Newmarket on Fergus. The Collins are household names in Clare soccer with brothers Bernard, Noel and Kieran playing starring roles for Newmarket Celtic and the Clare Oscar Traynor soccer teams for many years. Indeed Noel's son Gary has followed his fathers footsteps in playing for Celtic and being a member of this years Clare Oscar Traynor team that got to the final.

Brendan was a top class tradesman and worked for many years as a foreman for Jim Woods. Indeed Brendan worked in Moscow in the early eighties building living quarters for the first waves of employees of Aer Rianta International who were opening the first Duty Free Shops in Russia.
