Toffees Survive Second Half Onslaught

Leeds United 1 Everton 2

Leeds were playing at home for only the second time in seven matches and were doing so on a newly-installed pitch which they had been bought for £300,000 from Tottenham. After digging up the previous pitch which had come in for much criticism it was hoped that the better surface would facilitate Leeds brand of football but once again their achilles heel in defending came back to haunt them. Leeds had only conceded six goals in their past six league games and boss Marcelo Bielsa will be seething with the poor defending particularly the second goal which once again came from a corner kick. Leeds have conceded 17 goals via set-pieces in the Premier League this season (including penalties), the most of any side.

The Toffees took the lead on nine minutes when Lucas Digne's cross from the left wing was side footed home by Sigurdsson.… Read more

Take A Bow Sir Paddy

Leicester City 1 Leeds United 3

Leeds travelled to The King Power Stadium to take on the flying Foxes today where a win would put home side second in The Premiership. However they were left disappointed as Bielsa's men put in a brilliant shift to atone for the drubbing they received earlier in the season at Elland Road from Brendan Rodger's boys. If one man deserved the plaudits it was the much maligned Patrick Bamford who steeped up today with two assists and a super goal to rightly get the Man od The Match Award. Only the great Tony Yeboah (17) had a hand in more goals in their first 20 Premier League games for Leeds than Sir Paddy who has 15 this season.

The Foxes started the game brightly and took the lead on 13 minutes when Harvey Barnes scored after a wonderful run and quick exchange with James… Read more

Raphinha Master Display Help Down The Magpies

Newcastle United 1 Leeds United 2

Leeds completed the double over The Magpies for the first time since season 1975/76 and put and end to their three game losing streak which included a defeat in the FA Cup to Crawley Town. Newcastle where looking for their first win after four successive defeats in The Premiership and started the game brightly but got caught on 17 minutes when Raphinha scored with a cracking left foot strike from outside the area. This seemed to actually spur Steve Bruce's side on but the found Leeds keeper Meslier in fine form.

On 57 minutes Miguel Almiron ended Newcastle's run of 454 minutes of football without a goal and they looked like the side more likely to go on and claim all three points. However four minutes late Jack Harrison scored with a wonder strike off his left foot from just inside the area after… Read more

The Gulls Flying High

Leeds United 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Leeds put on their poorest and most lack luster performance of the season as The Seagulls ended a run of nine league games without a victory.Top-scorer forward Neal Maupay tapped in after 17 minutes following an excellent build-up from Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Trossard. This was Maupay's fourth goal in five games against Leeds going back to his time with Brentford. One would have expected Leeds to provide a strong reaction to last weekend's embarrassing FA Cup defeat at League Two side Crawley Town but alas they never got into their stride in an uninspiring display. Granted Kalvin Phillips who is such an integral part of the side was suspended ans along with a make shift back line The Whites never looked at anything like their best.

Brighton nearly scored a second some minutes later when Trossard's deflected cross hit the… Read more

Son On Song For Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur 3 Leeds United 0

This was always going to be a huge test for Bielsa's team going to London which hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Leeds in the past and so it proved once again as Man Of The Match Son Heung-min scored his 100th goal for Tottenham.
Leeds played a significant part in their own downfall with goalkeeper Illan Meslier's misplaced pass on 29 minutes leding to Harry Kane opening the scoring with a penalty after Ezgjan Alioski fouled Steven Bergwijn.

Two minutes before half time Kane turned provider with a super cross from the right that was swept in by Son at the near post. As is the case with chasing the game Leeds left themselves exposed in defence and were fortunate not to be more severely punished by Mourinho's side. On the hour mark the game was as over when Toby Alderweireld's near-post header… Read more

Swashbuckling Display By Rampant Leeds

West Bromwich Albion 0 Leeds United 5

Despite missing three International centre backs through injury in Koch, Cooper and Llorente, Leeds but in a superb performance at The Hawthorns to give newly appointed Baggies manager Sam Allardyce plenty of food for thought. The visitors got off to a bizarre start on eight minutes when Sawyers attempted to play the ball back to Sam Johnstone without looking. However, the Albion keeper was out of position as he had moved out left to try and give an easier option to Sawyers and the ball nestled in the Baggies net. Leeds absolutely dominated the game giving their best display of the season and equaling their away record for goals scored.

On 31 minutes Ezgjan Alioski's superb drive from just inside the area was followed five minutes later by a brilliant finish from on loan Jack Harrison to put The Whites in full control.… Read more

Dyche Fumes At Referee's Decision

Leeds United 1 Burnley 0

Leeds got off to a brilliant start when Patrick Bamford scored his tenth goal of the season when he converted a penalty in the 5th minute after Claret keeper Nick Pope had brought him down. Everyone was expecting Klich, who is the regular penalty taker to step up and take the kick but in an interview after the game Bamford explained that Bielsa had said that if there was a penalty today he was to take it. And what a finish into the top corner.

This actually spurred Burnley into life and the big taking point in the game came on 18 minutes when in truth Leeds were lucky not to concede what looked a stone wall penalty.

Leeds keeper Meslier came out to catch a high ball, failed to do so and clattered into the back of Ben Mee. Newely appointed Premier League referee… Read more

Red Letter Day For Solskjaer

Manchester United 6 Leeds United 2

It was the game all Leeds fans were looking forward to once the Premiership fixtures came out but it wasn't in the script that Leeds would conceded two goals within the first three minutes of kick off. Scottish International Scott McTominay became the first player ever to score two goals within the first three minutes of a Premier League game. The midfielder found the bottom corner with a super strike after just 67 seconds before doubling his tally moments later with a brilliant finish from Anthony Martial's pass. It was 3-0 on 20 minutes, Fernandes reacting quickest to Luke Ayling's challenge on Martial before slamming a powerful strike past Illan Meslier.

This was a horrendous star for the Yorkshire men and it got worse on 37 minutes when once again they conceded from a set piece. Lindelof capitalised on some dreadful Leeds defending from a… Read more

Silver For Leeds As They Hit The Magpies For Five

Leeds United 5 Newcastle United 2

This was a game that the home side dominated from start to finish having 69 per cent possession, 25 shots on goal but despite all this Steve Bruce's men were level with ten minutes remaining and clinging on for a point. Leeds went behind on 26 minutes when Irish International Jeff Hendrick ghosted in at the back post to tap home with no sign of Alioski. converted from close range before Patrick Bamford's header levelled matters. Rodrigo's brilliant stooping header gave the advantage to the home side, but Newcastle hit back through defender Clark. Leeds got a deserved equaliser when Bamford head home on 35 minutes when the ball came back off the crossbar from a Rodrigo shot.

On 61 minutes Rodrigo stooped to head home a brilliant goal following a Harrison cross but four minutes later another Irish International Ciaran Clarke headed in… Read more

Hammers Blowing Bubbles At Elland Road

Leeds United 1 West Ham United 2

Leeds got off to the best possible start when after six minutes the took the lead in rather controversial circumstances. Mateusz Klich converted a twice-taken with VAR ordering the retake after ruling keeper Lukasz Fabianski had stepped off his goal line. However it was the visitors who dominated the rest of the half and on 26 minutes levelled but Leeds keeper Illan Meslier must shoulder the blame here. He failed to stop Tomas Soucek's soft header from yet another set piece which has been Leeds achilles heel this season and last.

No surprise then that The Hammers winner came from another set piece when on 80 minutes Angelo Ogbonna rose above Leeds captain Liam Cooper to send a bullet of a header into the top corner with Meslier stranded. Leeds suffered their third defeat in six home Premier League games this season and… Read more

You Can't Beat Class

Chelsea 3 Leeds United 1

Sometimes on has to hold their hand up and say it was not to be and so it was for Bielsa's men at Stamford Bridge. When one considers that Chelsea's substitute keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga cost €71.6M ( more than the entire Leeds United squad )from Athletic Bilbao when he signed two years ago on a seven year contract it puts into perspective the difference between the Championship and Premiership sides.

It was former Blues striker Patrick Bamford ( he spent five years at Chelsea without making a senior appearance)who gave Leeds a tonic start after four minutes after getting between defender Kurt Zouma and keeper Edouard Mendy to roll the ball into an empty net from twelve yards. It was a tonic start for Leeds but it only stirred the Blue stars into action. Leeds had a huge slice of luck on 21 minutes when… Read more

Sweet Win Against The Toffee's

Everton 0 Leeds United 1

This was always seen as a tough away fixture for Biels's men but they put together a superb performance for their third away win of the season. Leeds have won as many away Premier League games in 2020-21 as they did in the entirety of 2003-04 (their previous top-flight campaign) and along with that they have kept consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since January 2003.

Leeds started on the front foot and had 13 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, the most in a Premier League half this season. Unfortunately finding the net has posed difficult for Leeds despite all this possession along with finding Everton and England No 1 Pickford in top form.
Jack Harrison should have put Leeds on ten minutes when he slid in and just missed the target at the back post. With five minutes to… Read more

Gunners Should Have Been Gunned Down

Leeds United 0 Arsenal 0

Leeds were the first promoted Premier League team to score 14 goals in their opening eight matches since Charlton in 2000 and boy could they have done with one of those against The Gunners. They had the luxury of playing the last forty minutes of the game against 10 men as Pepe was sent off for Arsenal for head butting Aloski and with twenty five shots on target one would imagine that one of those would have gone in. However this was not to be with three efforts hitting the woodwork in a game that The Whites deserved to take all three points.

Rodrigo's 18-yard shot hit the angle of bar and post, Bamford headed off the post and Raphinha crashed a shot off the same post late on. Brazilian winger Raphinha is the first from his country to start a Premier League game for… Read more

The Eagles Clip Bielsa's Wings

Crystal Palace 4 Leeds United 1

It was a second successive 4-1 defeat for Leeds who are now unfortunately beginning to leak goals at the back at an alarming rate. Once again Leeds were undone by set pieces for the opening two goals and the third was an own goal by Helder Costa. In truth Meslier in the Leeds goal didn't cover himself in glory and must take the blame for at least two if not three of the goals.

It was the €19.5M signing from Queens Park Rangers Eberechi Eze that caused the Leeds defence all sorts of problems in only his 5th ever Premiership game and also got his name on the score sheet. The first Palace goal came on 12 minutes when
Scott Dann headed in Eze's corner despite the presence of Cooper and Koch marking him. Ten minutes later Eze curled a free kick he had earned… Read more

Gunned Down By The Foxes

Leeds United 1 Leicester City 4

Games turn on small moments and when after two minutes Patrick Bamford missed a gilt edge chance for the home side with his header from less than five yards out going straight into the hands of Kasper Schmeichel. From his throw out Fuchs launched a long ball down the left wing where Barnes hurrying Koch into the early mistake as the defender's pass back was picked up by Vardy who then laid it on a plate for his team-mate. Fifteen seconds after Leeds should have been ahead City hit on the break to go ahead on three minutes.

It was only a matter of time before Vardy who was tormenting the Leeds defence put another on the plate for his team mate Tielemans. His diving header on 21 minutes was brilliantly saved by Meslier but rebounded kindly for Tielemans to make it 2-0. Despite dominating… Read more

Sir Paddy Hits A Hat Trick In Stunning Win

Aston Villa 0 Leeds United 3

What a performance at Villa Park from Bielsa's men who were without England International midfielder Kalvin Phillips and captain Liam Cooper , both missing through injury. Add to that a makeshift defence and taking on the division's form team on their own patch it has to go down as their best performance under Bielsa.

And what can one say about the much maligned Patrick Bamford who conjured up a superb hat trick and could even have scored one or two more. Bamford has scored six goals in Leeds' first six league matches this season - only Eric Cantona in 1992-93 (also six) has scored as many goals for the club at this stage of a Premier League campaign. Another interesting stat for Leeds fans is that Bamford becomes the ninth Leeds player to score a Premier League hat-trick and the first since Mark Viduka… Read more

Reality Check For Leeds

Leeds United 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1

Leeds have enjoyed an excellent start to their first top-flight season since 2004 but suffered their first home defeat in 12 games in all competitions since February. A win would have taken Leeds up to third but Bielsa's side got a reality check from Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves.

In only the second top-flight Elland Road meeting between these two clubs since 1981 it was Wolves who took all three points with a fortuitous goal by Jimenez. Struijk who came in for the injured Liam Cooper slipped as he challenged Jimenez who took the ball across field from the right flank before checking inside to shoot from the edge of the box. Kalvin Phillips who was just back from England International duty tried to block the Mexican's effort but only succeeded in heading into the opposite corner leaving goalkeeper Illan Meslier stranded. It was cruel look… Read more

Superby Display After Stuttering Start

Leeds United 1 Manchester City 1

This game was billed as a battle between City manager Pep Guardiola and his inspiration Marcelo Bielsa who he has spoken fondly about sice he came to manage Leeds. It was all City for the first twenty minutes as Leeds looked nervous on the ball. When Raheem Sterling skipped past two defenders on 17 minutes while cutting in from the right wing and planting a shot in the corner of Meslier's net it was no more than City deserved. However this seemed to spur Leeds on and in a brilliant first half both Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling forced Ederson into good saves while De Bruyne hit the post for City.

Bielsa brought on ex City player Poveda at the interval for Alioski and he was to prove a thorn in City 's side for the second half. Leeds leveled on 57 minutes when the previously… Read more

Thank You Darragh

Last Sunday Darragh O Loughlin arrived down to Moroney's with his dad Ollie to watch the Sheffield United vs Leeds United game on TV and he came bearing a beautiful gift for Ennislusc. Darragh is an accomplished furniture designer ( Studio Luden ) based in The Stables in Tulla and he designed a beautiful plaque in honour of Leeds return to The Premiership after 16 years in The Championship and League 1. The exquisite plaque will adorn the walls of Moroney's bar in The Market home to the Ennis Leeds United Supporters Club.

Darragh worked in Moroney's some years back before he went to the States and Ger ( Hanna) Hanrahan showed him the ropes of bar work which he put to good use Stateside. This wonderful one off piece is a tremendous gesture by Darragh which everyone in Ennislusc and Moroney's Bar is sincerely grateful for and certainly will… Read more

Bielsa Sends Ennislusc A Letter

Our excellent Secretary Mick Jones decided some weeks back to write a letter on behalf of Ennislusc to Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa thanking him for getting us back to the promised land that is The Premiership. In his letter Mick said how he had brought such joy to so many Leeds fans that he just wanted to express his thanks on their behalf. Little did Mick know that Bielsa would write back with a beautiful signed letter which arrived in the post this morning and this will shortly adorn the walls of Moroney's Bar home to Ennilusc.

Mick of course has the same name as the great Leeds United and England centre forward of the 60's and 70's and on the front of the envelop with Mick's address was the words in brackets nice name in reference to his namesake. Mick has kindly donated the letter to the club… Read more
