The Classic Is Marching On

We are now just a month away from our Mike Mac Golf Classic at Ennis Golf Club and things are progressing well. Presently we have 15 teams on the timesheet, our main sponsors are on board, the tee box sales are somewhat slow but as has been said at many of our meetings these only take off in the last ten days. The Dunne family have sponsored a beautiful trophy for the winning team and we got confirmation last Saturday that Johnny Giles would most definitely be there on the day.

We will be having both a raffle and auction on the day and our staunch clubman Steve Underwood has secured both signed Republic of Ireland and Leeds United jerseys for the occasion.Great work Steve ! And not forgetting the Johnny Giles signed jersey which will also be on offer on the night. Our posters for the event are up around… Read more

Revenge Is Sweet

Preston North End 1 Leeds United 2

Leeds climbed to fifth in the table after goals from Neil Kilkenny and Billy Paynter helped them beat relegation-threatened Preston. Leeds took the lead when Kilkenny's spectacular 20-yard shot blasted into the top right-hand corner. United three points from the automatic promotion places, doubled their lead when Billy Paynter hit the top left corner.

Keith Treacy found Iain Hume and the forward halved the deficit with a well-taken shot from just outside the box. The defeat leaves Preston 13 points adrift of safety at the bottom and in need of a miraculous turnaround in fortunes if they are to avoid dropping to League One. Preston looked the more likely to score, but the home side were stunned when Kilkenny struck in the 29th minute.

Leeds then pressed for a second and just before the hour Paynter found the target for what proved to be… Read more

Three Points But Still Problems At Back

Leeds United 5 Doncaster Rovers 2

The little men Max Gradel and Jonny Howson each scored twice as Leeds fired five past Doncaster to get their Championship promotion push back on track. This was a deserved win for Leeds, who are the Championship's top scorers but our defensive frailties almost cost us dearly only for a superb last twenty minutes got us out of jail.

Man of the Match Max Gradel has been a key player for Leeds this season and it was no surprise when he gave them the lead in the 11th minute, jinking away from his marker before firing in low from fully twenty five yards. Leeds dominated play and should have been further ahead but their wastefulness was punished on 46 minuteswhen Sharp was fed by ex Leeds player John Oster and despite his first effort being blocked by Leeds keeper Kasper Schmeichel he scored at the… Read more

Outfought, Out Thought,Out Of Our Class !

Swansea City 3 Leeds United 0

Leeds were thought a lesson in finishing at the Liberty Stadium in front of a record home crowd (19,309) by a Swansea team who look well equipped for the Premiership after a lapse of 28 years. Their pace up front and domination in midfield insured that Leeds had their toughest 90 minutes of the season and well full value for their easy victory over the leakiest back four in the Championship

Swansea went ahead on 13 mins when left-back Neil Taylor burst forward, fed Sinclair and the former Chelsea winger skipped past two defenders and seemed to lose the ball. But the ball ricocheted to Swans striker Moore whose deft back-heel fell right into Sinclair's path and Swansea's top-scorer's finish was emphatic. Then from Mark Gower's resulting corner, Leeds again needed a goal-line clearance from a Dyer effort - this time Jonathan Howson was on hand to… Read more

Tuesday Night Blues Once Again

Leeds United 3 Barnsley 3

A late Kieran Trippier leveller earned The Tykes, who twice came from behind, a point against 10-man Leeds.Barnsley took a shock lead on two minutes when Jason Shackell powered in a shot that gave Casper no chance and silenced the home crowd. However, the home side eventually equalised when Steele missed Neil Kilkenny's inswinging left-wing cross and Becchio nodded into an empty net. Referee Mark Clattenburg then controversially ruled that Hill had fouled Gradel, who picked himself up to score from the spot eight minutes before the interval.

Despite Leeds losing Bradley Johnson to a second yellow card, Gradel restored their lead before Trippier's 25-yard free-kick meant the spoils were shared. United will be left ruing a setback to their promotion hopes while Barnsley will be pleased their determination to hold out for a point. United are the top scorers in The Championship but our defending as I've… Read more

Somma To The Rescue

Leeds United 2 Norwich City 2

Despite heavy snow in the Leeds area overnight the ground staff insured that this game went ahead and what a cracker it proved to be for the 31,601 in attendance. United came into the game with just one loss in 18 games and against fellow promotion hopefuls Norwich. Leeds skipper Jonny Howson shot inches wide on four minutes with Becchio heading Robert Snodgrass's free-kick onto the post as the home side began full of enthusiasm, taking a deserved lead on 16 minutes.

On 16 minutes Max Gradel's cross from the left was flicked on by Robert Snodgrass and Becchio eased past defender Adam Drury to head home his 15th goal of the season at the far post. David Fox drew a fine save from Kasper Schmeichel with a 25-yard shot as Norwich sought a foothold in the game, but the woodwork soon came to… Read more

Snoddy Shows His Class

Bristol City 0 Leeds United 2

Leeds extended their unbeaten league run to five matches with a 2-0 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate and completed the double over City.
The Robins made a bright start to the match and fashioned the first meaningful chance of the game only for ex Scunthorpe striker Woolford to head over. Leeds were soon off the mark though when Snodgrass (who won his first cap for Scotland in Dublin on Wednesday night vs Northern Ireland) combined well with Gradel before finding himself space to slip the ball past James on seventeen minutes. United immediately went in search of a second and the impressive Snodgrass left fly with a 25-yard shot but James tipped the ball round the post.

Bristol eventually found their rhythm but Louis Carey fired over from 20 yards, and with half time approaching, Marvin Elliott had a sight of goal but could… Read more

Ennislusc Launches Mike Mac Golf Classic

Last night in Moroneys the Ennislusc committee that has been designated with running the inaugural Mike Mac Golf Classic met and got the wheels turning for the classic tee off on April 9th in Ennis GC. As one would expect there is a wealth of experience on the committee who have lent their time and effort to insure the success of this classic where the funds will be evenly divided between Cahercalla Hospice Ennis and the Johnny Giles Foundation (theses funds will be spent only in Clare area ).

The committee are now in the process of getting four main sponsors for the event, tee box sponsorship, posters printed and of course most important a time sheet in place for the event. To further publicize the event Phil Brigdale has a page on Facebook ( under events section, Mike Mac Classic) and regular updates will be found on moroneysbar.com and this… Read more

Johnny Giles Plays For The Mac

Having got out of bed at 4.50am this morning I wasn't looking forward to my first day back at work after a weeks holidays but then again I didn't expect the call I received at 11.23am either ! You know when you see a number appear on your phone with no name it's someone looking for something,a long lost friend or else a wrong number. As my ringtone Marching On Together rang out I wondered who could be at the other end of the line.

When I heard the words Hello Johnny, this is John Giles I didn't know whether to roar or start singing Marching On Together. He had promised us on Saturday at the launch of the Walk Of Dreams in the Auburn Lodge that he would let us know by Wednesday if he was available to take part in our Mike Mac Memorial Golf Classic on the 9th… Read more

Meeting Our Hero JG

Today five members of Ennislusc had the pleasure of meeting ex Leeds great and Republic Of Ireland captain / manager Johnny Giles at a private audience in the Auburn Lodge. Johnny is in town to launch the Walk Of Dreams which is being promoted by the John Giles Foundation and will take place on March 27th and also to present the schoolboy/girl awards.

We were invited by CSSL Chairman Ronnie Pyne and Vice Chairman Mickey Guilfoyle to meet Johnny in relation to our proposed Golf Classic on 9th April at Ennis Golf Club and for their kindness we're eternally grateful. The classic which is being run in memory of our ex friend and club President Mike McNamara is also collecting funds for the Johnny Giles Foundation and Cahercalla Hospice in Ennis.

With this in mind we asked John about his availability to play on the day and he promised to let us… Read more

Somma On Song For The Whites

Leeds United 1 Coventry City 0

South African international Davide Somma scored a second-half winner as Leeds edged past Coventry to keep alive their top six prospects. Simon Grayson picked an unchanged team from the side that played against Hull and United pushed forward from the start with Somma wasteful on four minutes after being set up by Robert Snodgrass. However on ten minutes Richard Wood went close for the Sky Blues when his close-range hit was deflected wide by Luciano Becchio.

Becchio missed two chances one either side of half time but Leeds got the crucial strike on 56 minutes when the impressive Snodgrass set up Jonathan Howson who fed Somma to score. The three points got Leeds to within three points of an automatic promotion spot but more importantly we had a clean sheet. For sheer effort and no amount of skill on the wing Max Gradel was voted… Read more

Comical Defending Cost Us Once Again

Hull City 2 Leeds United 2

Leeds came back from two goals down to share the spoils with Hull City in this Yorkshire derby at the KC Stadium. Simon Grayson's charges had enjoyed 10 days' rest prior to the clash and that breather may have left the United backline rusty as they were exposed after 30 seconds. Ex Leicester City striker Matt Fryatt opened the scoring for Hull with a smashing shot into the corner from Aaron Mclean's defence splitting pass.

Then centre-half James Chester made it two on 40 minutes when he rose unmarked to head Andy Dawson's corner into the net. However Robert Snodgrass blasted a free kick beyond Brad Guzan from 25 yards out just on half time and Davide Somma completed the Leeds come-back with a left foot shot nine minutes into the second half. Both managers made changes in search of a winner but the game… Read more

Nearly Lights Out At Pompy

Portsmouth 2 Leeds United 2

Substitute Davide Somma scored with his first touch to earn Leeds a point at Portsmouth in a match twice halted for floodlight failure. United manager Simon Grayson welcomed back striker Luciano Becchio, and defenders George McCartney and Leigh Bromby into his starting line-up for the clash with Portsmouth

Leeds were first to threaten when Max Gradel forced Portsmouth goalkeeper Richard Ashdown to punch away his thumping 25-yard drive in the second minute. However Pompy responded and almost took the lead two minutes later when Ibrahima Sonko met Lawrence's corner with a firm header, only for the ball to rebound off the crossbar.

Greg Halford twice went close with headers from two more Lawrence corners and both David Nugent and Utaka fired off target as the home side took control. Portsmouth deservedly made the breakthrough in the 26th minute when Lawrence weaved his way into the penalty area from… Read more

Just What The Doctor Ordered

Leeds United 4 Scunthorpe Utd 0

Leeds outlined their promotion credentials with a four-goal demolition of struggling Scunthorpe. United manager Simon Grayson made one change from the side which drew with Arsenal last weekend with on loan Sunderland defender George McCartney returning in place of Ben Parker.

On-loan Arsenal winger and crowd favourite Sanchez Watt fired the home side in front, before Max Gradel coolly doubled the lead and Bradley Johnson rifled the third. With two minutes left, Leeds substitute Davide Somma rounded off a superb home display with a neat angled finish.

The win means Leeds have lost only one of their last 15 matches and sit fifth in the table and level on points with the two teams directly above them - Cardiff and Norwich.

Oh So Close

Arsenal 1 Leeds United 1

On a day when members of Ennislusc went to Mountshannon in East Clare to watch the 3rd FA Cup game (courtesy of an invitation from long time members Liam and Mike Jones) they must have thought that another famous victory was on the cards until Cesc Fabregas's 90th-minute penalty rescued a draw for Arsenal and denied Leeds a shock FA Cup victory.

The Gunners dominated for long periods but, against the run of play, Denilson fouled Max Gradel and Robert Snodgrass put Leeds ahead from the spot. Luciano Becchio went close to making it 2-0 with a bullet like header that Szczesny did superbly well to save but late Arsenal pressure and two superb substitutes paid off for Wengers men. It was a dramatic finish to a thrilling third-round tie and means Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is still yet to taste defeat to a lower-division side… Read more

Slim Is Right

Cardiff City 2 Leeds United 1

I could not put it better myself as our eloquent Club President Slim Corry put it on the guestbook re his feelings for Cardiff City. We have now lost six games in a row to The Bluebirds stretching back 27 years and after a wonder strike by Snodgrass hauled us back into the game we proceeded once again to give a silly goal away at the back. As Simon Grayson said in his post match interview two silly mistakes undone us and once again the back four were at fault. When are we going to learn I hear you say. The dogs on the street know we are in disarray at the back and only for the heroics of Casper Schmeichl in goal recently we would have got some drubbings. I'm sick to my teeth of saying our achilles heel is our back four but… Read more

Becchio To The Rescue

Leeds United 1 Middlesboro 1

Leeds waited until stoppage time to extend their unbeaten run to 12 matches thanks to Luciano Becchio's strike. Boro centr half David Wheater opened the scoring on 20 minutes when he glanced in Julio Arca's in-swinging corner and Arca could have extended Boro's lead when he shot wide.

Lacklustre Leeds burst into life when Lloyd Sam went close after a fine run and shot, but it looked like they would lose before Becchio intervened. But Ross McCormack will be regretting his late miss, although that would have been mighty harsh on the visitors, who were resolute throughout.

Three games over the Christmas and three games we possibly should have won but we'll settle for three points and continue our unbeaten record.

Another Defensive Disaster

Leeds United 3 Portsmouth

Andy O'Brien scored two own goals as Leeds surrendered a two-goal lead for the second successive game and missed the chance to return to the top two in the Championship table. On loan O Brien who once played with Portsmouth won't forget this game in a hurry nor will our fellow member Enda Howard. He had three horses up on a accumulator at prices og 7/4,7/4 and 6/1 with all the money going down on the Leeds game. No need to tell you how he felt in the 92nd minute when Andy O Brien scored his second og of the game. Simon Grayson's side extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches but failed to capitalise on Cardiff's 4-1 defeat at Watford and finish 2010 fourth in the table.

Max Gradel put Leeds ahead after seven minutes before Jonathan Howson added a second three minutes later and Leeds… Read more

Bogey Team Strike Once Again

Leicester City 2 Leeds United 2

The Foxes came back from two goals down to earn a draw against in-form Leeds at the Walker Stadium.
United went into the game in second place in the Championship on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run that had thrust Grayson's men into the promotion places. Max Gradel headed in from close range on 19 minutes to put the visitors ahead before Robert Snodgrass extended Leeds's advantage after firing in an suberb 18-yard strike following a corner.

However disaster struck for a dominant Leeds when keeper Kasper Schmeichel's foul on Darius Vassell allowed Paul Gallacher to pull one back for the Foxes from the penalty spot after 72 minutes. Indeed Casper can consider himself lucky not to have received a red card for the offence and from the resultant penalty he was given no chance.
And, four minutes later, Foxes captain Andy King equalised when… Read more
