Dire Home Form Continues

Leeds United 0 Reading 1

Reading striker Simon Church scored the game's only goal in the second minute as the Royals beat play-off rivals Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Wales international controlled Jobi McAnuff's pass and put an angled finish past Andy Lonergan from 12 yards after less than two minutes on the clock.

Jamie McAnuff caused all sorts of problems to the home defence all through the game and was rightly voted Man Of The Match. Leeds remain sixth despite the defeat, struggled in front of goal, but Danny Pugh's shot from inside the area was well saved by Adam Federici. The Royals, who beat another promotion rival in West Ham a week ago, are now just one place behind

This was another dire home performance akin to our visit to Elland Road for the Barnsley game. Why can we not get it together at home ? It looks like we lack… Read more

The Late Late Show

Watford 1 Leeds United 1

Robert Snodgrass scored an injury-time penalty(95th min) as Leeds salvaged a draw against Watford in the Championship. To say we got out of jail was a understatement as Watford missed a penalty of their own with just two minutes of normal time remaining. Marvin Sordell had his penalty chance after being fouled by Patrick Kisnorbo but Alex McCarthy saved and Snoddy made Watford pay by equalizing after Nyron Nosworthy fouled Finnish International Mika Vayrynen. United were dealt a blow before kick off when captain Johnny Howson was ruled out with Danny Pugh taking over his position in the middle of the park.

Watford started the game much better than Leeds and were rewarded when Kightly ( on loan from Wolves) got the better of Kisnorbo and unleashed a superb, angled effort from the edge of the area past McCarthy, who was playing his final game of… Read more

Gary Speed RIP Is Our Inspiration

Leeds United 2 Millwall 0

Scottish International Robert Snodgrass scored both Leeds goals against Millwall as Elland Road paid a moving tribute to former player Gary Speed who died on Sunday last.Gary played in United's title-winning side in 1992 and team-mates Gary McAllister, Gordon Strachan and David Batty laid a wreath before kick-off. All three were very emotional with tears flowing in honour of their former team mate.

The big screen showed a video of Gary Speed's goals before the game and Leeds fans chanted his name for 11 minutes, from the 11th minute, in recognition of his shirt number as they had done during their midweek 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
In a poor first half United had their keeper Alex McCarthy to thank for keeping the scores level when he dived to his right to push Darius Henderson's downward header round his post.

Millwall started the second half brightly, with Scott Barron's… Read more

Didn't See That Coming

Nottingham Forest 0 Leeds United 4

Leeds paid the best possible tribute to former number 11 Gary Speed with an emphatic win over Nottingham Forest on an emotional night at the City Ground. To say we expected such a performance is beyond our wildest dreams considering the drivel we watch on Saturday.
Applause before the match for Speed, who died at the weekend, was followed by 11 minutes of chants from the 11th minute by Leeds fans.

Simon Grayson, who was a great friend of Gary after they signed schoolboy forms with Leeds on the same day when they were 14 had asked his players to win the game in Speed's memory and they did not disappoint. How appropriate it was that Leeds's first goal came almost exactly at the end of the United fans 11 minutes of concentrated chants for Speed, with Snodgrass picking up the ball midway into the Forest… Read more

Grayson Must Go

Leeds United 1 Barnsley 2

Barnsley won at Elland Road for the first time since 1990 with one of their best performances of the season to add to Leeds troubles at home. The visitors went ahead when Jim O'Brien squared for Ricardo Vaz Te, whose scuffed shot looped in over Alex McCarthy.

It was 2-0 when Man Of Match Jacob Butterfield's strike was pushed by Alex McCarthy into the path of Craig Davies, who finished with easy and not a Leeds defender in sight. On 55 minutes Ross McCormack fired in a 25-yard free-kick to give Leeds some hope but Barnsley hung on despite David Perkins second booking.

This was a deplorable match, two poor teams and daylight robbery to have to pay £36 to watch. After two superb away victories we were expecting a lively contest and predictions such as 3-1 were banded about before kick off. How wrong we were. Bar… Read more

20th Ennislusc Trip Looming

Tomorrow week Friday 25th November our first club trip of the year will take place. Unfortunately due to the economic situation, the closeness to Christmas and the difficulty in getting to Leeds this will be our smallest group to visit the hallowed ground since our formation over 10 years ago. Indeed on this occasion we have a group heading over on Friday morning ( Slim,Marty B, Bryan Woods, Leon Quirke, Kevin Barry along with Johnny & Marian Moroney) while the remainder including Nuggy, Tommy Kelly and Josie Hestor will head over on Saturday morning.

While it may be our smallest squad yet I'm sure we'll hit the usual spots like The Ship, Flares's etc and hopefully we'll collect the three points on offer on Saturday afternoon. Oh and I forgot the traditional sing song in The Marriott on Saturday / Sunday morning. Bring it on. MOT

Clayton's Wonder Strike Seals Unlikely Win

Leicester City 0 Leeds United 1

It was with trepidation that most Leeds fans viewed this game after the drubbing we received on Wednesday night at home to Blackpool. We were up against our bogey team and had never beaten them at The King Power Stadium. We also faced ex United stars Jermaine Beckford and Casper Schmeichel both who were facing their ex team mates for the first time since their departure from Elland Road.

In a match of few goalscoring chances, midfielder Clayton\'s long-range strike in the 68th minute proved decisive. Leeds much maligned defence was rarely tested by City, with on debutant keeper Alex McCarthy not having a meaningful save to make. The win moves Leeds up to seventh in the table, while Leicester are 12th.

Leeds will go into the upcoming international break in much better spirits after bouncing back from Wednesday\'s loss to Blackpool - only the second time they… Read more

Beyond Belief

Leeds United 0 Blackpool 5

In what was one of the worst displays of goalkeeping since the halcyon days of Gary Sprake Paul Rachubka had a night of horrors. Blackpool destroyed former manager Simon Grayson's 10-man Leeds on a night to forget for the Elland Road faithful. Rachubka (a summer signing from Blackpool) was hauled off at half-time after three errors helped The Tangerines cruise into a 3-0 lead.

Lomana Lua Lua slotted home the opener before Shelvey converted a retaken penalty after Tom Lees saw red as a result of Rachubka dropping the ball. Shelvey completed his treble either side of Lua Lua lashing in his second. The attendance at Elland Road was 22,423 but one expects when we travel over for their next home game at the end of the month that they will be lucky to break the 20,000 mark with this sort of performance.Enough said,I'm still not over the… Read more

O Dear O Dear O Dea

Leeds United 1 Cardiff City 1

Scottish International Robert Snodgrass struck a second-half equaliser for Leeds after an inspired performance by ex Celtic keeper David Marshall had threatened to deny United. The result ends a string of six straight defeats for Leeds against the Bluebirds, but the home side created enough opportunities to feel they deserved better.

Cardiff took the lead on 17 mins when Irish International Darren O Dea tried to shepherd a ball to safety but he stumbled inside the area and Mason robbed him and then rounded Paul Rachukba to roll into a empty net. This rocked United but they responded well and McCormack and on loan Andy Keogh were inches from netting before half time.

Leeds took full control after the break as but they found David Marshall in top form. However he had no chance when Snodgrass poked in from Tom Lees knock-down 17 minutes from time.… Read more

Giant Sinks United

Birmingham City 1 Leeds United 0

Serbian International Nikola Zigic who stands 6'8'' scored his first goal since February as Birmingham extended their winning run to six games thus putting an end to Leeds seven match unbeaten run. This was United's game in hand and a win would have put them third in the table but on this occasion while having the better chances throughout the game they looked leaden footed and off colour. Birmingham started impressively and ex Rangers winger Chris Burke was causing United a lot of problems down the right wing.

The only goal of the game came on 35 mins when Stephen Carr broke down the right and delivered a cross which was not cleared by the Leeds back four. The ball found its way to Zigic who controlled and shot, seeing the ball take a deflection off Paul Connolly before beating a despairing Rachubka. And Zigic was… Read more

O Dea Saves The Day

Peterborough United 2 Leeds United 3

A goal in the 5th minute of injury-time by Darren O'Dea earned United a valuable three points against 10-man Peterborough. Leeds went ahead through Andy Keogh's stunning volley but Gabriel Zakuani levelled with a powerful header from a corner. Posh striker Lee Tomlin saw red for a late challenge on Andy Keogh on 37 mins before Leeds regained the lead when Adam Clayton took substitute Lloyd Sam's pass and stroked home on 54 mins.

Mark Little thought he had earned Posh a point when netting on 88 minutes but luckily for Leeds there was time to grab a winner and make up for Tuesday nights late equalizer for Coventry. This is the first time Leeds have won at Peterborough in the league. They were victorious in a League Cup tie in 1988 and an FA Cup match in 1974.

93rd Minute Horror For United Keeper

Leeds United 1 Coventry City 1

A stoppage-time equaliser from Coventry defender Richard Wood after a horrendous mistake by keeper Paul Rachubka denied Leeds a place back in the top six. United went ahead midway through the first half when Darren O'Dea fired home an angled shot following a Paul Connolly deflected cross.

Grayson's boys came close to going 2-0 up when Ross McCormack missed from six yards before Coventry keeper Joe Murphy saved from Danny Pugh and Adam Clayton. The Sky Blues made them pay when Paul Rachubka fumbled a Cyrus Christie cross in the last seconds of in jury time and centre half Wood pounced to score.

This was a bitter pill for United to swallow and once again our old failing at the back came back to haunt us. It's getting so persistent now it not funny as a win tonight would have seen us with three clean sheets in… Read more

Pugh,Another Clean Sheet !

Doncaster Rovers 0 Leeds United 3

Simon Grayson celebrated his 150th game in charge of Leeds and it was one to remember for the 41-year-old. And for the second week running loan signing Danny Pugh got his name on the score sheet. Rovers went in to the game on the back of two wins and a draw following the arrival of new manager Dean Saunders and completed the signing of exEngland goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on loan in midweek.

United took the lead on 20 mins when Pugh side footed home after the Doncaster defence failed to clear Robert Snodgrass's free-kick from the right. Jon Parkin had Donny's best chance just before the break but could only head wide. Then Leeds top scorer Ross McCormack doubled the advantage on 51 minutes with an excellent overhead effort which looped over a stranded Kirkland.

Young full back Tom Lees who is a revelation this season then… Read more

Finally A Clean Sheet

Leeds United 1 Portsmouth 0

Danny Pugh scored on his second home debut for Leeds to give United victory over Portsmouth.
Back at Elland Road on loan from Stoke, Pugh lost his marker Greg Halford to head home on 14 minutes for a rare goal for the defender. United are now three points outside the Championship play-off places having played a game fewer than their promotion rivals (game vs BVirmingham is outstanding fixture).

In an attempt to shore up the Leeds defence, manager Simon Grayson's recalled the previously-ostracised full-back Paul Connolly for a first appearance in a month and he went on to play the proverbial blinder. It may have been a very poor game with very few chances for both sides but three points and a clean sheet were just what the doctor ordered for the Leeds manager. Hopefully we can build on this result and finally get some confidence going with… Read more

Late Late Show From The Whites

Brighton & Hove Albion 3 Leeds United 3

Ross McCormack snatched an equaliser deep into stoppage time as Leeds stopped Brighton from returning to the top of the Championship table.
Leeds raced into a two-goal half-time lead courtesy of strikes from Andy Keogh and McCormack.

Craig Mackail-Smith, Brighton's 3M signing reduced the arrears then turned provider, winning the penalty when taken down by a clumsy tackle from Leigh Bromby which Ashley Barnes scored.
Barnes then supplied Mackail-Smith who slotted home on 84mins and this looked like giving The Seagulls all three points but Leeds were not to be denied.

And with barely a minute remaining of stoppage time the impressive McCormack slammed home his ninth of the season from Jonathan Howson's cut back.At this stage for the want of repeating myself if we don't sort out our centre back paring we are going no where. One would not think that Darren O Dea was a… Read more

Ross To The Rescue

Leeds United 2 Bristol City

Striker in form,Ross McCormack's 86th-minute winner snatched victory for 10-man Leeds at a half full Elland Road. The attendance was down nearly 5,000 on the corresponding fixture last season which shows either the economic crisis is hitting home or else the fans are losing faith with our stuttering defence. Adam Clayton who is by far and away our player of the season so far had given United a third minute lead but ex Leeds midfielder Neil Kilkenny curled in a super equaliser from 25 yards against his former club eight minutes later. United had made a dream start with Robert Snodgrass breaking free down the right in the third minute. His cut-back from the byeline picked out Clayton, whose shot from 12 yards found the top corner.

McCormack and Snodgrass both lifted shots over the crossbar early in the second half, but City soon wrestled the lion's… Read more

Eagles Wings Clipped

Leeds United 3 Crystal Palace 2

United new scoring sensation Ross McCormack scored twice as Leeds came from behind to secure a welcome win over Crystal Palace. The hosts took the lead when McCormack headed débutante Charlie Taylor's cross into the far corner on eight minutes. The Eagles hit back four minutes later when Paddy McCarthy netting from close range before Sean Scannell turned in Jermaine Easter's centre on 21 minutes. It looked like Leeds frailties at the back were coming back to haunt us but Grayson's boys showed resilience and took the fight to Palace for the remainder of the game.

Luciano Becchio returned to the fray for the first time this season on 58 mins and this signaled a new impetus in the crowd and most importantly in the players attitude. He heading home a McCormack free kick on 58 mins and Man Of Match McCormack took a pass… Read more

Disaster At The Back Once Again

Ipswich Town 2 Leeds United 1

After a very encouraging opening 45 minutes disaster hit United when Aidy White was sent off for a professional foul on Emmanuel Thomas three minutes into the second half. This certainly took the gloss off a fine United performance up to then after Ross McCormack had headed home a Snodgrass cross. With Jimmy Bullard now introduced to Ipswich's midfield area Leeds were on the backfoot and it was no surprise that The Tractor Boys were on level terms on 77 mins.

Substitute Jason Scotland firing his side level with a sweetly-struck effort, five minutes after he had entered the fray and even then United looked like they might hold on for a point. However that was wishful thinking and a Keith Andrews shot took a deflection off Paddy Kisnorbo to leave keeper Lonergan stranded. This was Kisnorbo's second own goal of the week but not quite… Read more

Hammer Blow From Leeds

West Ham United 2 Leeds United 2

Despite the bookies offering 4/1 on Leeds to win they put in their best performance for quite some time when grabbing a deserved equalizer in injury time from Man Of Match ( once again) Adam Clayton.
to deny West Ham a third consecutive victory. This was an absorbing and exciting encounter between two sides with Premier League aspirations.

Leeds had kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 games and that defensive frailty was exposed on six minutes when Cole wrestled his way past Tom Lees and flicked the ball past keeper Andy Lonergan from Matt Taylor's corner. Prior to this Lonergan had tipped two shots over the bar and it was from the third consecutive corner that The Hammers scored.

The game turned though when Leeds striker Robert Snodgrass hit the woodwork with a superb shot. That seemed kick start United and they had the… Read more
